Mauli Ola Kicks Off 2011 Surf Experience Tour in San Onofre, CA

Mauli Ola Foundation begins its 2011 National Surf Experience Tour on May 1st at Church Beach in San Onofre, California. For Mauli Ola’s Surf Experience Director, Bobby Serna, the timing couldn’t be more perfect. “It’s exciting to kick off our surf tour at the beginning of Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month,” shares Serna, going on to explain, “there’s a CF walk in town on Saturday, April 30th, which is great because the families can participate in the CF walk on Saturday and then come to our surfing event on Sunday.”

Executing this special surf experience event was a challenge for Mauli Ola Foundation, as the MOF crew had to pass muster with the United States Marine’s Camp Pendleton, which happens to sit right on Church Beach. “Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) had to give us clearance, but they were helpful in getting us proper permits and clearance, and giving us use of the beach’s front parking lot,” explains Serna.  “We were so happy when they called and said we were approved for the event!”

San Onofre is an ideal location in Southern California as it is nestled right on the border of Orange County and San Diego County, making the trip convenient for more families to attend.

“We anticipate getting a nice turnout of CF patients and their families from both San Diego and Orange County, probably ten to twelve kids when all is said and done,” states Serna.

This first 2011 Surf Experience Day event will be met with plenty of fanfare. Surf pro Gavin Beschen is flying in from Hawaii, UFC star Nissen Osterneck is flying in from the Carolinas and ASP Worldtour surf champ Kalani Robb will also be in attendance to help coach kids out on the waves.  “Beginning in 2011, Kalani was appointed our Community Outreach Director for Mauli Ola Foundation, and his ASP Worldtour status brings some great exposure to our cause,” explains Serna.

After all of the surfing festivities, CF patients along with their families, volunteers, pro-surfers and staff members will head over to Hawaiian style restaurant, Hapa J’s, where the pro-surfers will mingle with the crowd and sign autographs.
