Kelly Slater & Quiksilver Donate $10K to...

21 December 2010

Kelly Slater donates $10K to Mauli Ola Foundation through the Quiksilver Foundation’s “10 for TEN”, celebrating Slater’s 10th ASP World Championship.

In celebration of Kelly Slater’s historic 10th ASP World Surfing Championship and in honor of his philanthropic nature, Quiksilver is donating a total of $100K to ten different charities with a total of $10K going to each charity that has been handpicked by Slater. After attending two of Mauli Ola’s Surf Experience Days to benefit kids with Cystic Fibrosis, Kelly Slater has chosen Mauli Ola Foundation as one of his “10 for TEN” charities that will receive a gift of $10K through the Quiksilver Foundation.

“We are excited to be working with The Champ on selecting caring organizations, all with good causes that are more than deserving of $10K each, exclaimed Ryan Ashton, Director of the Quiksilver Foundation.

“The Quiksilver Foundation has given Kelly the opportunity to create awareness and support for non-profit organizations he is passionate about and that deserve a celebratory donation. Partnering with the Quiksilver Foundation, Kelly reviewed numerous worthy causes and selected 10 non-profits that will each receive a donation of $10K in celebration of his 10th ASP World Surfing Championship,” continued Ashton.

The additional nine non-profit organizations to receive $10K through Quiksilver and Kelly Slater’s charitable collaboration include:

Na Kalai Wa’a Moku O Hawai’i
Kokua Hawai’i Foundation
Space Coast Early Intervention Center
Best Friends Animal Society
Boys and Girls Club of San Clemente
Smile Train
Waves for Water
LA Surf Bus Foundation and SurfAid

Kelly Slater has attended Mauli Ola Foundation’s Surf Experience Day in Haleiwa, Hawaii in 2009 and in 2010. Mauli Ola provides surfing instruction and mentoring by top pro-surfers to children who are living with the genetic disorder, Cystic Fibrosis. This one-on-one interaction with some of the industry’s top surf stars and the opportunity to learn to surf significantly boosts morale for CF patients. Concentrated saline properties found in the ocean and in the sea air provides scientifically proven and documented natural healing and ease from CF symptoms. The combination is priceless for kids who participate in Mauli Ola’s Surf Experience Days.

James Dunlop, Executive Director of Mauli Ola Foundation explains, “Kelly has attended a few of our CF Surf Experience Days, including our latest one at Haleiwa, Hawaii in December, which has been a thrill for everyone, especially the kids. To have him show his financial support for Mauli Ola Foundation through the Quiksilver Foundation is tremendous and a true testament to our cause.  Kelly is our Champion and we are honored to have him involved with Mauli Ola.”

States Kelly Slater, “Ten $10,000 donations is really special. As a kid I could not have fathomed being able to give such a nice gift to charities I believe in and it was totally unexpected! Thank you again to Quik and the Quik Foundation.”

The Quiksilver Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to benefiting and enhancing the quality of life for communities of boardriders across the world by supporting environmental, educational, health and youth-related projects.
