Pro-Athletes Play Golf for Cystic Fibrosis Awareness...

3 August 2010

Description

Mauli Ola Foundation’s 3rd annual Surfers For Cystic Fibrosis Golf Tournament took place at the Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point, California on August 3, 2010, and the event was a success on all fronts.

It was a bright and sunny day with the third and fourth holes overlooking the Pacific Ocean as 144 celebrated professional athletes hit the links in support of Mauli Ola Foundation’s Surf Experience Tour, which benefits young people living with Cystic Fibrosis.

Notable athletes on the golf course included: Honoree and pro-surfer Makuakai Rothman; North Shore “Wolf Pak” member and extreme surfer, Kala Alexander; pro-surfer and brother of three-time world champion, Andy Irons, Bruce Irons; six-time Triple Crown surfer Sunny Garcia; and pro-surf siblings Jason and Benji Weatherley.

Other pro-surfers including Sean Moody, Fred Patacchia Jr., Nathan Fletcher and Dean Morrison were also on hand, as was mixed martial arts fighter, Nissen Osterneck. The event also had a guest appearance by mixed martial artist and UFC - Ultimate Fighting Champion, BJ Penn.

All of these talented and generous athletes did their part at the golf tournament to raise funds to support the 2010 MOF Surf Experience Tour – currently holding 20 surfing events throughout the U.S. with stops in California, Hawaii, Texas, Florida, South Carolina, Virginia and New York.

“Our surf experience days are essential in supporting kids and young adults who are living with the genetic disease of Cystic Fibrosis. Surfing is a natural and effective way of treating their respiratory distress,” states MOF’s Special Events Director, Steve Swanson. “The way the high saline content in the ocean air helps to clear the lungs of CF patients is nature giving back at its finest!”

The event culminated with Hawaiian pro-surfer Kalani Robb winning the $5000.00 putting completion by making three consecutive putts, accumulating to 100 feet. The event also offered four closest-to-the-pin competitions, four hole-in-one competitions with a 2010 Mercedes Benz C300 on the line at hole 5, and two long drive competitions. Raffle prizes included surf boards, skate boards, putters, golf bags, and vacations packages.

A special thanks goes out to Title Sponsor, Sponsor Me; Presenting Sponsor, Ambry Genetics; Cart Sponsor, Agilent Technologies; Water Sponsor, Roche; and Hole Sponsors, Primo Beer, Raindance Technologies, Etnies Shoes and Sapporo Beer. Lunch was provided by Beach Pit BBQ. Two hundred Flexfit MOF customized golf event hats were handed out at the tournament, with a Flexfit MOF hat given to each golf participant.

“The hard work, dedication and generosity of all of the event’s sponsors and volunteers helped to make this an unforgettable day,” expressed Swanson. “After such a great success at this year’s golf tournament, our 2011 golf tournament is already in the works.”
